How to record a Podcast

Getting started

Making a Podcast isn't as daunting a task as it might at first seem. In fact you can make very good quality Podcasts with a small amount of equipment and some free software.

What you will need

Software for your computer
Hardware to connect to your computer

Software

There is a great piece of free Open Source Software called Audacity that is ideal for making Podcasts which can be run on Windows, Mac OS 9 and X and Linux. Using Audacity you can record and you mix together multiple audio files. Another good option if you use a Mac is GarageBand which is both free and powerful.

If you are using Audacity you will also need to download the LAME MP3 encoder which allows you to export your audio content from Audacity as an MP3 file

Hardware

To start with all you will need is a reasonably good quality microphone and headset to use with your computer. If you decide to continue Podcasting the first upgrade to your equipment should always be to purchase a better microphone.

If you want to invest a little more at the outset without spending a large amount of money there are a number of Podcasting kits available that cost around £100 and come complete with everything you need. One of the most popular is the Behringer Podcaststudio which can be bought as either a USB or Firewire kit. These come complete with a good microphone, headphones, sound mixer and software.
