Now that you have a recording space set up you can turn your attention to the recording itself.
You will need at least an outline of what is going to be the episode of your Podcast. Depending on your preference you may also need a script to work from. Reading from a prepared script can sound rather wooden so if possible work from a plan rather than a rigid script. If this is not possible get to know your script as well as you can in advance by practicing it. This will help you to sound more natural.
Your outline should include where you are going to add in any music or other sound effects if you are using them. If you are using a sound mixer these can either be recorded during the Podcast or added later after you have recorded your words. Until you are more confident with the process these are best added in later to allow you to concentrate on voice recording.
You should take as much time as you need to get used to recording with your equipment before you start recording your episode. Feeling settled and in control of what you are doing may take a while to achieve but time spent getting to that point is never wasted and will produce a much better result. Remember you are not live, you can always stop and start again, take your time and get it how you want it to sound.
Make sure you and any guests are comfortable and sure about how the recording is expected to proceed.
Let anyone else in the building know that you are recording. Switch off phones (don't forget your mobile) and anything else that might make unexpected noises.
You are ready to go. Make sure all your equipment is plugged in and switched and press record in your software and dive in.
