1 - The Real Avatar: Mine - Story of a Sacred Mountain
Mine, narrated by Joanna Lumley,
tells the story of the remote Dongria Kondh tribe's struggle to protect
Niyamgiri, the mountain they worship as a God. London-based mining company Vedanta
Resources plans a vast open-pit bauxite mine in India's Niyamgiri hills, and
the Dongria Kondh know that means the destruction of their forests, their way
of life, and their mountain God.
Music by
Skin and Robot Club.
Update:
David v. Goliath: Indian tribe in ‘stunning’ victory over mining giant 24 August
A tribe in India has won a stunning victory
over one of the world’s biggest mining companies. In an extraordinary move,
India’s Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has blocked Vedanta Resources’ controversial plan to mine bauxite
on the sacred hills of the Dongria Kondh tribe.
Mr Ramesh said Vedanta has shown a ’shocking’ and ‘blatant disregard for the
rights of the tribal groups’. The Minister has also questioned the legality of
the massive refinery Vedanta has already built below the hills.
The news is a crushing defeat for Indian billionaire Anil Agarwal , Vedanta’s majority owner and
founder.

In the brutal war in Congo where over five million people have died
in the past decade, children have endured the brunt of the suffering.
"Children of Congo" documents the plight of street children living in
Kinshasa and confirms the wide-spread accusations of child witchcraft,
torture and child prostitution. The film also examines the efforts to
reintegrate demobilized child soldiers, displaced refugees, and orphaned
children following the eruption of the massive Nyiragongo volcano, near
the city of Goma in Eastern Congo. These heroic efforts are finally
bringing some measure of hope and stability to the lives of the
Congolese people.

9 - City vs Automobile : enemies engage
In Paris, Barcelona and Los Angeles local authorities are trying to encourage citizens to abandon their cars for cleaner modes of travel. But opposition is great. Some people just love their automobiles and don't want anything to obstruct their route. In Paris, a redevelopment project targeting the Place de la République aims to give more room to cyclists and pedestrians. But drivers oppose a draft law that aims to reduce car traffic by nearly 15%. In Barcelona, the redevelopment of the city’s main artery is also criticized. Local officials hope to cut traffic by about 80%, by extending the streetcar and expanded pedestrian areas. Approximately, 79% of Barcelona residents voted against this redevelopment. In Los Angeles, where public transportation is nonexistent, the local government is promoting carpooling. Cars carrying two or more passengers can use the fast lane that is strictly reserved for carpooling. However, crafty drivers have found interesting ways around this law. Watch to find out more.

12 - Forest Day 3 at COP15 Copenhagen
The Colombian forest has been the setting for a drug industry battlefield for years. The growing market for drug consumption in Europe and the United States encouraged by media and lifestyle, provokes a huge damage in third world countries where production is made at a very low costs. Authorities do as much as they can but the market is very demanding and poverty drives local broke farmers into growing illegal crops to support their families. For years, Colombia has been fighting drug production but consumption is not controlled in the big economies. In general terms, Colombian institutions an people fight between survival and preservation with minimal resources.

Back in January, in partnership with Inside the Outdoors Foundation,
Newport Beach Film Festival, Newport Bay Naturalist & Friends and
OC Parks, we helped launch a contest for all OrangeCountyHigh School
students. The task was simple; create a 30 or 60 second public service
announcement (PSA) focused on any environmental topic of their choice.
We challenged them to make an ECOMMERCIAL that would tell send a
message about what was most important to them when it comes to
sustainability and environmental awareness.
After the April 9th deadline, there were more than 100 entries to
review and choosing a winner was a difficult task indeed! There were 3
different judging bodies and with five winning spots up for grabs and a
grip-load of prizes the competition really heated up in the last week.
Sunday, April 25th, we were happy to come together at the Earth Day
Celebration 2010 presented by Newport Bay Naturalist & Friends at
the OC Parks’ Peter and MaryMuthInterpretiveCenter to celebrate the
winners and their achievements. Winners walked away with cash prizes, Stormy Monday skateboards, Volcom product, Electric product, and prizes from all the other sponsors (big thanks to all of them!).
In the end, it came down to four winning ECOMMERCIALS:

21 - Fighting the gender pay gap
Women earn an average of 17% less than men in the European Union, though this figure varies widely between countries and professions, and is usually greater in the private sector. The difference exists even though women often have better educational qualifications than men. Moreover, women remain hugely under represented in all spheres of power and decision making.
The video was filmed in Germany (example of a school in Munster which has instigated a 'Girls' and Boys' Days'), in Finland (introduction of the Gender Equality Act in 2006 and analysis of its impact in the public sector with the Finnish Police, and in the private sector with the Neste Oil Porvoo Refinery) and in Belgium (example of a woman coming up to retirement, who has recently had an unpleasant shock when discovering how low her pension will be).

Three-quarters of consumers in a new survey give companies only an
average or below average grade on how they’re engaging customers around
key sustainability issues, according to the 2010 Cone Shared
Responsibility Study, released last week by Cone LLC. The report states
that 84 percent of Americans believe their ideas can help companies
create products and services that are a win for consumers, business,
and society, yet only half, 53 percent, feel companies encourage them
to speak up on corporate social and environmental practices and
products. 60 percent of those surveyed say they would be more likely to
buy a company’s goods and services if that company incorporated their
ideas about sustainability.

34 - Organic, Green, and Fair Trade . . . Fundraising?
Organic,
Green and Fair Trade: these are three words you don’t usually find in
your kid’s school fundraiser. In a market littered with cheap tricks
and even cheaper products, here’s an alternative to making your next
fundraiser good for the environment, good for small farmers and good
for you!
Many of us have been there… staring down at a glossy catalog, our
eyes glazing over from one crowded page to the next. A small child is
bouncing on their toes nearby, eagerly awaiting your purchasing
decision and thinking only of the plastic toy (made in China) that they
will receive at the end of this for all their hard work. At this point
we close our eyes and point to something at random. This time: a tub
full of cookie dough. The last time: holographic gift wrap that made
your head hurt just thinking how and where or how it was made.
The truth is these items sell. Schools need to fundraise in order
to offer important services, like after- school programs, classes
focusing on the arts and sciences, even paying for practical and common
sense items like markers, tape and special reading materials. The large
fundraising companies cater to these needs, touting large margins in
exchange for inexpensive junk. We buy because we care about our schools
and our community… but there are alternatives available that allow us
to support our schools while also supporting a more fair and just food
system.
I’d like to introduce you to Equal Exchange Fundraising: a program
of the first and largest Fair Trade company in the United States. Equal
Exchange offers something you won’t find anywhere else in the
fundraising world: organic and fairly traded foods, beautiful fairly
traded gifts and recycled cotton gift wrap (tree-free!). With Equal
Exchange Fundraising, your school or organization can support
sustainability, enjoy award-winning products and make a difference in
the lives of small farmers and artisans across the globe.
Hundreds of schools have made the switch. “I don’t think I could do
any other fundraiser,” said Kim Montgomery, a seventh grade teacher in
Houston, Texas, who has participated in the fundraiser for the past
three years. “The Equal Exchange fundraiser has great products and a
good mission.” These products include fairly traded and organic coffee,
chocolate bars, cocoa, tea, and healthy snacks – things people consume
every day. Here’s a fundraiser that helps fund a school’s valuable
programs – things like arts and science programs – while also
benefitting small-scale farmers who grow really high-quality foods in
remote parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The Equal Exchange Fundraising Program also provides an opportunity
to talk with kids about where their foods come from, how wealth is
distributed around the world, and how we can make choices as consumers
to make that wealth distribution fairer. There’s even a Fair Trade
curriculum, Win-Win Solutions.
With this curriculum, your child can learn about the life of a cocoa
farmer and how their daily actions have direct impact on the lives of
farmers across the globe.
You can contribute to a more just world, be green, raise money for your school and eat well – all in one simple fundraiser. For more information and to sign up for a free info kit, go to www.equalexchange.coop/fundraiser.

40 - CSRminute: Canada's 50 Greenest Employers List; Ammado Helps FIGS Donates School Uniform
The editors of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project have announced
that country’s Greenest Employers list. 50 Canadian companies and
organizations were recognized, including some of Canada’s best known
such as the Research in Motion, the Royal Bank of Canada, and McGill
University’s Health Center. Other winners included less familiar
organizations with innovative environmental initiatives, such as New
Flyer Industries Canada and Rescan Environmental Services. Now in its
third year, the Canada’s Greenest Employers competition includes
detailed reasons for selection of the winners, outlining hundreds of
eco-friendly ideas that employers have put into place.
FIGS, a California-based maker of ties and bow ties, has started a
program to donate a school uniform to an African child for each
purchase made on its Web site. In Africa, a proper uniform is a
requirement for attending school, and those who can not afford one
often go uneducated. FIGS is focusing on providing uniforms to needy
children in 105 schools in Kenya and Tanzania. The company was
assisted in developing the campaign by Ammado, an online network that
connects socially engaged companies, individuals, and non-profits in
forming active communities.

43 - UPS Airline Pilot Named Winner Of Top Global Service Award
UPS (NYSE: UPS) has awarded Paul Warrington of Rancho Cucamonga,
Calif., the Jim Casey Community Service Award, the company's top honor
worldwide for community service. Warrington, an assistant chief pilot
at the UPS Airlines, was recognized for his long-standing commitment to
the impoverished and underserved people of Cambodia.
For the past seven years, Warrington and his wife have made regular
trips to Cambodia to help improve the lives of residents by donating
supplies and providing education on water purification methods and
disease control. During the last four years, Warrington and his wife
have led numerous mission trips and together, their teams have
completed more than 12,000 volunteer hours.
The Jim Casey Community Service Award winner is chosen annually from
nominations solicited from UPS's global workforce of more than 400,000
employees. The Casey Award was created to recognize outstanding
community service, a hallmark of UPS's corporate legacy and commitment
to social responsibility.
Warrington’s dedication to community service is evident in local
communities here in the U.S. as well as overseas. He has worked with
the Agape House, a California shelter for women and children, as well
as helped relocate a Somalian refugee family to Kentucky (the
headquarters of UPS’s global air operations). For these community
service efforts, Warrington also has been awarded the President’s
Volunteer Service Award by President Barack Obama.
"Success is not about what you gain or accomplish in life," says
Warrington, "It’s what you do to improve the lives of others that
really matters. I count myself considerably blessed to be able to help
others and am honored to use my talents and gifts to make a difference."
"Paul’s dedication to helping those in need is remarkable and a
wonderful example of how to answer the call to service," observed UPS
Chairman and CEO Scott Davis. "We recognize at UPS that volunteerism
helps make us a stronger and more successful company. Paul’s community
involvement is an inspiration to us all."
Founded in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Ga., The UPS Foundation's major
areas of focus include community safety, nonprofit effectiveness,
economic and global literacy, environmental sustainability and
diversity. The UPS Foundation pursues these initiatives by identifying
specific projects where its support can help produce a measurable
social impact. In 2009, The UPS Foundation donated more than $43
million US to charitable organizations worldwide. Visit community.ups.com for more information about UPS's community involvement.

44 - Sodexo to Customers: Eat Low on the Food Chain for Earth Day
Choosing just one all plant-based meal on April 22 could make a big
difference to the planet. So says Sodexo, Inc., a leader in Quality of
Daily Life Solutions, who is asking its 10 million U.S. customers to
eat low on the food chain this Earth Day. To inspire the change, Sodexo
chefs are cooking up new ways to serve the classic peanut butter and
jelly combination.
Environmental advocates estimate that Sodexo’s PB&J For A Day
campaign could save 1.3 billion gallons of water, 12,400 tons of carbon
emissions and about 5,500 acres of land if all of the 10 million served
daily by Sodexo choose one plant-based meal.
Customers at Sodexo-served college
campuses, corporate cafés, hospitals, and senior residences will be
given the option to choose a plant-based protein meal on Earth Day in
the fun form of creative peanut-butter and jelly cuisine. Sodexo’s
Earth Day menu choices will include: Fluffer Nutter Club Sandwich,
Grilled Peanut Butter and Banana with Chocolate Chips, Toasted Peanut
Butter Baguettes with Jelly Dipping Sauce, Peanut Butter Pancakes with
Jelly Syrup, and for dessert customers can try the PB&J Sweet Shot
or a PB&J Muffin. You can find the recipes and cooking demonstration videos online.
For this campaign, Sodexo is partnering with the PB&J Campaign, a project of Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs
(SEE). The PB&J Campaign approaches positive change one meal at a
time by illuminating the differences one single dining decision can
make. Eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich instead of a hamburger for
a simple reason: one sandwich can save 133 gallons of water and 24
square feet of land over a burger, and each one served will save 2.5
pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, which is the same benefit as
driving a hybrid car for half a day.
The company recently announced broad and detailed commitments for sustainability and corporate social responsibility. The Better Tomorrow Plan
adds a global approach to Sodexo's continuing commitment to improving
the quality of daily life for customers in three key areas of the
environment, health and wellness, and community development.
